RJA #15b: Reflection on What You Learned

This English class was definitely more computer based, which is different, but I liked it because the research you ulimately have to do is done a computer, so it makes sense. I learned alot about different search engines, and things that I did not knew existed such as : social bookmarking, text clouds, and other search engines other than google. I will continue to use the website that I learned from the class for other research that I will have to do later on in my studies. I also learned that I don't really like blogging when it comes to doing a research paper, for me it was kind of inconvinent to keep track of my research via web. I would much rather have a hardcopy of my progress, it makes it easier for me to follow.

RJA #15a: Word Cloud

Wordle was not working for me so I used a similar word cloud website

RJA #14: Annotated Bibliography, Part 2

"Bakke decision." Encyclopædia Britannica. 2009. Encyclopædia Britannica Online. 21 Nov. 2009 This explained a quick overview about the Allan Bakke vs. Regents of University of California-Davis. Allan Bakke during the 1970’s applied to UC-Davis medical school and twice he was rejected admission. UC-Davis runs on two different admission practices; one is a general admission, while the other is a special admission, which reserves 16 out of 100 spots to minority students. Allan Bakke sewed UC-Davis by saying that it violated the 14th amendment and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The court ruled that UC-Davis was allowed to set race as a requirement for admissions, but that it could not set racial quotas. The court ruled 5-4, and Allan Bakke was granted admission to UC-Davis medical school.
I used this court case because it was relevant to my research paper in which it supported one of my claims for the critics of Affirmative Action, that Affirmative Action causes Reverse Discrimination.
"BalancedPolitics.org - Affirmative Action (Pros & Cons, Arguments For and Against)." BalancedPolitics.org - Free Balanced, Non-Partisan Discussion of Political & Social Issues for Debate (Pros and Cons - Decision Making Politics). Web. 18 Nov. 2009. .
The Pro’s and Con’s of Affirmative Action are debated on this source, along with detailed information on each claim. It also gives an overview about Affirmative Action, why it began, and the benefits in keeping Affirmative Action programs, while it also addressed how Affirmative Action can negatively affect society, its beneficiaries, and majority population.
I used some of the arguments that were displayed in this source to help support my evidence on both the proponents and the critics views of Affirmative Action.
Chang, Mitchell J. The Positive Educational Effects of Racial Dive rsity on Campus (2001): 1-13. Educational Resource Information Center. Web. 15 Nov. 2009. This source surveys students on a campus and seeks to find what the effects are of racial diversity on campus. One of the claims is that by having a campus be racially diverse, it enhances a students educational experience. Another claim made is that diversity also creates a richer learning environment. It also states that multiculturalism is good way of exposing people to what the world is really like. In the workforce people are surrounded with different ideals, and points of view from all sorts of walks of life. By creating diversity on a campus it helps students to be able to enter into the workforce where they will be faced with these different ideals. This will help them develop the skills and training that they will need to coexist amongst each other.
This source was great because it showed the side in which Affirmative Action, as a positive thing, proponents suggests helps create diversity for not only the minority but for the majority population as well. I found this article interesting because it was carried about as a Civil Rights Project from Harvard University.

"Class-Based Affirmative Action." Equality & Education. Web. 22 Nov. 2009. .
Equality and Education, an article carried about by the Century Foundation Project, aimed this article on Affirmative Action mending its goals to class based aid rather than race based. It shows that more and more there are disadvantaged kids who cannot afford a high quality education because of their economic background. What this article proposes is that 53% percent of Americans would be in support for class based affirmative action than race based. This article also supports the critics claim that Affirmative Action’s beneficiaries should be those with economic problems, because as higher education is become expensive these are the people that would benefit largely from this help.
Eisaguirre, Lynne. Affirmative Action A Reference Handbook. Santa Barbara: ABC-Clio Inc, 1999. Print.
This print publication shows an overview of Affirmative Action since its beginnings during the Civil Rights and Women’s movement of the 1960’s. It showcases both the proponents and critics argument that government policies can readdress gender and racial inequality. This book includes information on women, African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Americans as it highlights the most critical issues regarding Affirmative Action at the Federal and State levels today. It also includes sources on major laws and cases involving Affirmative Action, as well as a directory of organizations and agencies that deal with discrimination complaints.

Lynee Eisaguiree is an attorney, author, and entrepreneur who helps organizations solve employee relation problems through training, speaking, and consulting. She is also author of another book, Sexual Harassment Second Edition.

Elfman, Lois. Minority and Low-Income Students Suffer the Most as College Wealth Gap Widens (2009). Diverse Issues in Higher Education. 15 Jan. 2009. Web. 15 Nov. 2009. .

The States have not made a conscious decision to disinvest in term of higher education, because when the States budgets are constricted so does the budget of higher education. The impacted that this has had is on low income minority students at public universities and community college students. This article suggests that their should be more emphasis on low income minority students so that they will have the resources available to them that will ensure them success.
This source was relevant to show how the gap between economic struggles backgrounds and the costs of higher education had become an increasing problem with low income minorities. This information is also relevant to show that critics believe in aid being grated to students of low financial background or by merit I do agree that the high cost of higher education have made it harder for students who because of their economic background cannot afford a quality education as their counterparts.

RJA #13b: Annotated Bibliography, Part 1–

Suinn, Richard M. "Documenting the Positive Case for Affirmative Action." Analyses of Social Issues & Public Policy 1.1 (2001): 89. Academic Search Premier. EBSCO. Web. 14 Nov. 2009.

Affirmative action is under intense scrunity and attack across the nation. One historical rationale for affirmative action is the need to redress past discriminatory activities that prevented ethnic minorities from equal access. This article presents the new argument that increasing diversity can benefit the nonminority population. Briefly reviewed are findings relating to academic and intellectual outcomes as well as health outcomes.

“AP Interview: Obama on Affirmative Action”. Online Video. 02 July 2009. 15 November 2009. < http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1flZFbZiB4&feature=related>

President Barack Obama said the Supreme Court had 'moved the ball' on affirmative action in a decision favoring white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., but added the court had not ruled out the use of racial preferences in the future. Here President Obama talks about an affirmative action in which all people regardless of race should receive the same benefits.

Chang, Mitchell J. The Positive Educational Effects of Racial Diversity on Campus (2001): 1-13. Educational Resource Information Center. Web. 15 Nov. 2009.
This study examined links between racial diversity on college campuses and positive educational outcomes. This study used data from a 1985 freshman survey and the 1989 follow-up of the same students. The survey examined demographics, high school experiences, college expectations, values, attitudes, life goals, self-confidence, and career aspirations.Overall, campus diversity had a small but significant positive impact on students' college experiences. Both socializing across racial lines and discussing issues of race were reported as positive educational experiences.

Taylor, Betty Jeanne Wolfe. "Why White Students Need to Learn About Their Own Race." Diverse: Issues in Higher Education 27 Nov. 2008: 19. Academic Search Premier. EBSCO. Web. 15 Nov. 2009.

The author reflects on why White students need to learn about their own race. She recounts her experience of checking out books at her college library when a Black student asked her about a book she was holding titled "White Guys," by Fred Pfeil. The author suggests that a positive White racial identity and awareness of White privilege are necessary to stop racism at predominantly White institutions.

RJA #13a: Field Research Report

For my field research I did a survey. In this survey I gave a brief description of what affirmative action was and asked the students to circle if they were either female or male, and to identify their race. I then asked two questions which were as follows:
1. Do you support affirmative action programs?
Yes
No

2. Do you believe affirmative action programs create reverse discrimination?
Yes
No

Total participants= 19

Total Females= 8

Of those females: 2 Hispanic
1 Black/White
1 Asian
4 White

50% of females were in favor of affirmative action and do not consider
affirmative action to be reverse discrimination, while the other 50% of females
do not support affirmative action and consider it reverse discrimination.

Total Males=11

Of those males= 1 Hispanic
1 Asian
9 White

72.72 % of males were in favor of affirmative action and do not consider
affirmative action to be reverse discrimination, while 36.36% percent of males
do not support affirmative action and consider it reverse discrimination.

Overall: 63.15% of the class supports affirmative action and do not consider it
to be reverse discrimination, while 36.84 % of the class do not support
affirmative action and consider it reverse discrimination.

Conclusion: I was overall suprised on the outcome of my survey and did not consider
that almost all of the white males that were surveyed were proponents
of affirmative action. It total I did see the outcome of having at
least half of the class divided on this issue, because even if we like
it or not affirmative action effects the majority and miniorty pop.

RJA #10b: Argument

Claim #1: Affirmative Action programs help to aid minorities in school who other wise, because of their economic background can not recieve the same education benefits as their majority peers.

Claim 2#: Affirmative Action programs help create diversity in school and the workplace by renforcing the ideal of multiculturalism, multiculturalism advocates equality to ethnic groups without promooting any ethinic, religious, or cultural values as central.

Claim #3: Affirmative Action, as it is positive, promotes reverse discrimination to its couterparts by using ones race as a requirment to be aided in these programs.

Claim #4: Affirmative Action should aid those individuals on the basis of merit, and those with economic downfall rather than on the basis of someones race or sex.

RJA #10a: Thesis Statement

Affirmative Action programs help aid underprivelaged, low income, and intellectual minority students in college and universities, and within the workforce, but can also be the basis of reverse discrimination for the majority population.

RJA #9: Evaluation of Sources

Book:

Post, Robert, and Michael Paul Rogin. Race and Representation: Affirmative Action. New York: Zone Books, 1998.

Evaluation: I was really excited when I found this book through the Auraria campus library, because it will really benefit my research. This book bases the representation of race in the affirmative action scene. I will be really interested in finding what arguments are written in this book. Race is obviously the main factor when implementing affirmative action.

Website:

"Is affirmative action good public policy?" Debatepedia. 29 Sept. 2009. Web. 19 Oct. 2009. .

Evaluation: Debatepedia is helping me understand different sides of the argument towards affirmative action. I just puts into perspective other people's ideas, that I most likely will not be citing this information or using it, because it is biased.

Periodical:

Lithwick, Dahlia. "Law: Obama and Affirmative Action." Newsweek. (2008): 34.

Evaluation: Obama has said in an interview with Associated Press, that he is for affirmative action. I think this information will be relate to my research paper because it will showcase the opinions that officials in the government have to say about affirmative action.

Website:

"About the AAAA." American Association for Affirmative Action. Web. 19 Oct. 2009. .

Evaluation: Obviously this will be my best resource for affirmative action. This group is the American Association for Affirmative Action, and yes, it will be biased. But it will give my good information regarding what their ultimate goals are in implementing affirmative action in education, and the workplace.

Video:

Overview: Obama on Affirmative Action. 02 July 2009. Online Video Clip. Youtube. 19 October 2009. .

Evaluation: As I previously mentioned, in this video clip Obama gets interviewed my Associated Press and answers a few questions regarding affirmative action, and what his personal preference is to this matter.

Government Publication:

United States. U.S. Department of Labor. Facts on Executive Order 11246 — Affirmative Action. Web. 19 Oct. 2009. .

Evaluation: I like this fact sheet that the U.S. Department of Labor published because it gives the facts on this law that provides equality for all in the workplace. I will definitely give my approach to my affirmative action assignment to my research project, in which, i can use the information on this website to highlight the workforce towards affirmative action.

Internet Research Project

The internet search engine that I used was: Technorati( www.technorati.com).

Technorati is a search engine for blogs, it has houses about 112.5 million blogs, and about 250 million social media. It has categories which make it easier to search the website i.e. politics, religions, music, business, etc. I find that Technorati is useful to find out what other people are "blogging" about in different subject matters. Although, blogs are not usually credible, and are biased material, nonetheless, it gives a person good insight and opinions about different subjects. People can also post their own blog about their ideals and have people comment on their blogs and share them with others, also if you like someone's blog, you can subscribes to their blog via rss feeds.

I find that Technorati's strengths would have to be that it seperates the blogs by categories. It makes it easier to find the subject that you are trying to search and it even shows you the most popular blog in the category. I did find it frustrating that when i went to type in a keyword in the search bar for example: cats. I did not get any blogs releveant to cats even when I posted the word, cats, with the search strings: cats, pets+cats. All it did was show me blogs were the word cat or pets was in the blog.

Technorati searches a variety of different websites, but doesn't show what database it is taken from. For example if I typed in cats, and got a blog about the history of cats, it didn't display that the blog was found on Google or Yahoo, it just takes me to the website were the blog was found. Technorati does however have it own directory.

As of case sensitivity issue and stop words, Technorati shows no signs of it. The advanced search allows you to search through the blogs, videos, or photos. It also will give you the option of just exploring the entire post or just the tags, with additon choosing the authority type and the different languages. Techonarti also offers a support pages, were you can type a phrase, or look at the frequently asked questions and find your troubleshooting solutions there. I like that it does let you upload videos and photos related to your blog.

RJA #7c: Field Research Plan

I am going to do collect data from universities study body profiles. I will use College Board and the Princeton Review to find information that Universities publish annually of their schools admissions rate, the ethnic groups that make up the school, and the female vs. male ratio. I am doing a statistics research assignment so I will use the information that I gather in my English project to supplement my mathematics project. I was also looking into looking at surveys done in the past that have been published online or in articles about the enrollment rate of minorities in universities, and if they were selected based on the emphasis of affirmative action.

Resource searched : affirmative action.
Keywords used : affirmative action, colleges/universities, diversity, race, merit, financial aid, admissions, selection.

RJA #7a: Internet Research Tools

The Internet search engines that I most frequently use are: Google, and Yahoo. I use Google just because I find it easy, convenient, and just was is most popular in search engines.Yahoo, is something that I use once in awhile to check the latest news around the world, and I have an email account that I use daily, this is why I will use Yahoo some of the time to research topics, or just for pleasure. what I find frustrating about Google, is that amount of advertisements they show along with their results. A lot of the times the keywords that I type into the google browser will give me some obscure information that I did not ask for, which makes it annoying to have to scroll throughout the pages, because I like getting my results fast and concise.

RJA #5b: Finding Books

I really like using the Auraria Library to find book, so most, if not all of the books I will use to research will be from Aurira Library. These are a few of the books that I am looking into checking out:

Garcia, Mildred. Affirmative action's testament of hope : strategies for a new era in higher education. Vol. 277. Albany: State of New York, 1997. Print.

I decided to search throught the Ebsco Host database and see if I could look for more in depth searches for Afffirmative Action. I came across this interesting article about Affirmative Action in Higher Education. Key words used here for this search were: Affirmative Action, Diversity, Political Attitudes, Politics, Race, and Students.

RJA #3c: Developing Research Question

1. Who- Who is involved in the creation of Affirmative Action?
Who are the people being discriminated by Affirmative Action?
Who are the people being aided by Affirmative Action?
Who wants to keep Affirmative Action in tact?
Who wants to abolish Affirmative Action?

What- What are the benefit's of Affirmative Action?
What are the disadvantages of Affirmative Action?
What is causing so much controversy about this issue?

When- When was this organization created?
When did the federal government recognize and enforce this policy?

Where- Where did some of the most vital decisions regarding Affirmative Action take place?

Why- Why should Affirmative Action be a mean by which to bring equality to education and
employment?
Why doesn't Affirmative Action base their goals in bringing about the progression of
economically and educationally disadvantaged peoples, rather than the issue of race?

Should- Should employers and educational institutions use the Affirmative Action approach
when deciding who to employee or admit to their entities?
Should students have a part in voicing their opinions about Affirmative Action?

Would- Would the removal of Affirmative Action benefit/unbenefit employers or educational
institutions?
Would diversity be an issue in the workplace?
Does diversity contribute to a more better society?
___________________________________________________________________

2. How has Affirmative Action impacted a college/universty enrollment rate in terms of diversity?

How does it benefit minorities?

How is it hurting whites?

Has the retention rate of minority students increased?

Are there laws/individual people/groups that have tried to ban Affirmative Action?

Where there programs before the creation of Affirmative Action that helped minorities out?

What was the chance that a minority would be granted equality before the creation of Affirmative Action?
_______________________________________________________

3. I would like to address my paper to those both opposed to Affirmative Action and those supporters of Affirmative Action, and those people who are indifferent about the controversy. All audiences would be interested in learning about the benefits and disadvantages that occur in majority and minority groups. We can all learn about the decisions behind the admissions, employment choices that employers and colleges face. My purpose in writing this is so that I can be more aware of the types of programs that are available to minorities and how the effort in bringing about progression in more disadvantaged groups can also lead to discrimination in others. I would like to learn how their can be a chance of equality for all people's regardless of their ethnic background, and to learn why race is a factor that is involved in decision making in terms of education and employment.
___________________________________________________________________

4. The colored text questions in # 1 are the ones that would fufill the purpose of writing my research paper.

________________________________________________________

5. This is the question that most interests me: Should Affirmative Action base their goals in trying to increase the progression of economically and educationally disadvantaged peoples rather than on the basis of race?

RJA #3b: Narrowing Research Topic

I think that with a topic such as Affirmative Action, I would like to narrow my research rather than broaden it, because there are many ways in which the direction of this paper can go. I would like to discuss the controversy that the opposing audience has with promoting affirmative action in educational and employment affairs. Why they feel that it is another form of discrimination. I would also like to address the supporting argument in having opportunities available to the minority public of highly intellectual individuals who have felt the disadvantages of their couterparts. I think that learning about many sides of the controversy will lead me to better forming a thesis statement in which will lead my paper in the direction I choose to take it.

RJA #3a: Exploring Research Topic

I found it quite useful to use Debatepedia.com to find many opinions surrounding Affirmative Action. Some of the more interesting discussions I found on Debatepedia. are as follows:

Affirmative Action a good way to enhance social equality?

- Supporters of Affirmative Action believe that by enforcing Affirmative Action it will help level out equality among disadvantaged groups. They believe that is better for a minority student to graduate from a top university even if it means that their performance is low. According to the supporters, a student' success comes from graduating from a top university, and not their actual performance at the university. The argument continues by stating that intellectual African Americans who attend all blacks schools have a disadvantage among their counterparts (i.e. Asian, and White students), because black schools offer less Advanced Placement courses.

- The non-supporters of Affirmative Action believe that Affirmative Action actually causes discrimination amongst the majority and the minority. They believe the law should be "race-blind", it only adds to more prejudice from a group to another. Affirmative Action should not rely on the basis of race, rather shift its focus of those educationally and economically disadvantaged people. A minority person could have lived a life full of fruitful education and so for, while there exist disadvantaged Whites who did not have that same opportunity. They also argue that Affirmative Action will places students who are not on the same level with their peers enrolled in more rigorous course work.

President Obama's views on Affirmative Action

-President Obama believes that the issue of Affirmative Action should be lessened. It has not brought much racial progression, but has also not had a major impact on the admission of Whites seeking college admission or a job. He believes that on the basic of racial progressing, every race should be receiving the best education and nutrition and securing opportunities for all youth. That everyone should be treated fairly, and race should be rarely be taken into account.

Official site of Affirmative Action

- The American Association for Affirmation Action was created in 1974 as a national non-profit organization to produce affirmative action, diversity, and equal opportunity to increase the equality in education and employment. The purpose of affirmative action is to aid those successful peoples that are members of long time discrimination by opening doors to many educational, and employment opportunities. They believe that it is in the nation's best interest to keep affirmative action striving. By maintaining affirmative action it will guide the youth of this country to a better society of equality and fairness

1. I have chosen this topic because it is very relevant to my educational career. I am a women, and Latina, and want to know what the controversy is regarding promoting Affirmative Action. I would like to research this more in depth because I want to have a better understanding of what this program does to benefit the people that it does, and why there are people opposed to having a program created to aid underprivileged minorities. It is something that has always caught my interest about the disadvantages and privileges that effect the education of students regardless of their race, ethnicity.

2. As far as knowledge to this subject, I do not know much about. By definition according to Dictionary.com Affirmative Action is, "A policy or a program that seeks to redress past discrimination through active measures to ensure equal opportunity, as in education and employment." It is something that I know most colleges and universities, and employers try and promote. I remember reading a short section in my American National Govt textbook one semester about Affirmative Action and that some universities will use this system when deciding what students to admit to their school. I think that Affirmative Action is definitely something that has benefit a wide variety of the public to be perfectly honest, and something that I would definitely fight to keep as a minority student myself.

3. I would like to know when/where/how this program got created. I would like to know how this program can tend to be negative to my Caucasian counterparts, who might feel that this program is being discriminatory against them. It would also be interesting to see what advantages minorties students had before the program came to be as a comparison of how it has changed through the course of time now that they have more advantages in education than before. It would be also a good idea to find out what the students who have been apart of this Affirmative Action feel about Affirmative Action and if it have benefited them in their educational career, or if they feel indifferent towards it.

RJA #2a: Possible Topics

In my last posted I was leaning toward writing my topic based on music or sociology. I have taken though, more of the route towards education. I was looking into possibly looking into writing my paper on affirmative action. I do not know much about it other than, it is a program that promotes equality towards minorities. As a women, Latina, and first year generation college student, I want to know more about the controversy that surrounds affirmative action.

Something that also interest me in education is the retention rate of minorities students in college. I want to research the retention rate of a minority student after their first year at a four year institution, as opposed to their couterparts(i.e. caucasians). And within this I want to see if within the minority group do scholarship receipients, student with high g.p.a (3.00 and above), etc. have a better retention rate as opposed to non scholars, with lower g.p.a (2.00 and below).

Research Journal Assignment #1: Areas of Academic Interest

I have not declared my major as of yet, however, I am interested in the following:

  1. Music ( Concentration in Voice Performance)

  2. Sociology ( Working with minority students in seeking higher ed.)

I would like to research the the pro's of keeping music programs in schools.

Some websites that show support for keeping music in school are as follows:

http://www.mustcreate.org/index.shtml

http://www.mustcreate.org/index.shtml

As Sociology being another area of interest, I would like to find the statistical information and rention rate of a minority student in college, and the reason they wish to pursue and decline their college education.

I found a valuable website in which could help me with my research at:

http://www.acifund.org/ACI-CSN-infosheet-Feb08.pdf

I will further more find outside resources to gather the information on either subject of my interest. I think I will determine the subject in which I will write about depending on the amount of research I am able to entail.
