RJA #2b: Research Topic

Affirmative Action

1. I have chosen this topic because it is very relevant to my educational career. I am a women, and Latina, and want to know what the controversy is regarding promoting Affirmative Action. I would like to research this more in depth because I want to have a better understanding of what this program does to benefit the people that it does, and why there are people opposed to having a program created to aid underprivileged minorities. It is something that has always caught my interest about the disadvantages and privileges that effect the education of students regardless of their race, ethnicity.

2. As far as knowledge to this subject, I do not know much about. By definition according to Dictionary.com Affirmative Action is, "A policy or a program that seeks to redress past discrimination through active measures to ensure equal opportunity, as in education and employment." It is something that I know most colleges and universities, and employers try and promote. I remember reading a short section in my American National Govt textbook one semester about Affirmative Action and that some universities will use this system when deciding what students to admit to their school. I think that Affirmative Action is definitely something that has benefit a wide variety of the public to be perfectly honest, and something that I would definitely fight to keep as a minority student myself.

3. I would like to know when/where/how this program got created. I would like to know how this program can tend to be negative to my Caucasian counterparts, who might feel that this program is being discriminatory against them. It would also be interesting to see what advantages minorties students had before the program came to be as a comparison of how it has changed through the course of time now that they have more advantages in education than before. It would be also a good idea to find out what the students who have been apart of this Affirmative Action feel about Affirmative Action and if it have benefited them in their educational career, or if they feel indifferent towards it.

RJA #2a: Possible Topics

In my last posted I was leaning toward writing my topic based on music or sociology. I have taken though, more of the route towards education. I was looking into possibly looking into writing my paper on affirmative action. I do not know much about it other than, it is a program that promotes equality towards minorities. As a women, Latina, and first year generation college student, I want to know more about the controversy that surrounds affirmative action.

Something that also interest me in education is the retention rate of minorities students in college. I want to research the retention rate of a minority student after their first year at a four year institution, as opposed to their couterparts(i.e. caucasians). And within this I want to see if within the minority group do scholarship receipients, student with high g.p.a (3.00 and above), etc. have a better retention rate as opposed to non scholars, with lower g.p.a (2.00 and below).

Research Journal Assignment #1: Areas of Academic Interest

I have not declared my major as of yet, however, I am interested in the following:

  1. Music ( Concentration in Voice Performance)

  2. Sociology ( Working with minority students in seeking higher ed.)

I would like to research the the pro's of keeping music programs in schools.

Some websites that show support for keeping music in school are as follows:

http://www.mustcreate.org/index.shtml

http://www.mustcreate.org/index.shtml

As Sociology being another area of interest, I would like to find the statistical information and rention rate of a minority student in college, and the reason they wish to pursue and decline their college education.

I found a valuable website in which could help me with my research at:

http://www.acifund.org/ACI-CSN-infosheet-Feb08.pdf

I will further more find outside resources to gather the information on either subject of my interest. I think I will determine the subject in which I will write about depending on the amount of research I am able to entail.
